William A. Youngblood Award
About the William A. Youngblood Award
Since the inception of James River Art League in 1964, some members have earned a special place of recognition in our history. One of those distinguished members, William A. Youngblood, was the inspiration for the creation in 2009 of an award to recognize the exemplary service and leadership of outstanding members of James River Art League over many years.
A charter member of JRAL, William Youngblood was a talented, nationally recognized artist, and a tireless worker for JRAL. He organized exhibits, gave frequent demonstrations, designed our first logo, served as JRAL's first Treasurer and was an active and participating member for over 30 years. He was the subject of several feature stories in area newspapers, even as late as 2001. He died in 2009 at the age of 93.
In December 2009, JRAL created the William A. Youngblood Award to honor his service and his memory, and presented the award that year to five JRAL member artists in recognition of their longtime active contributions. The award continues to be a prestigious recognition for those who unselfishly donate their time and effort towards making JRAL a vibrant art organization.
