Apply for Membership in James River Art League
James River Art League welcomes all interested artists to apply for membership. Prospective members are juried by the JRAL Executive Board twice a year in November & March as either an Exhibiting or Associate (non-exhibiting) member. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must submit an application. Annual dues are $30.00; field trips or other special programs may require additional fees.
To apply for membership in JRAL, please fill out and submit the online form below. Applications must be received by the Membership Chair by October 15th for jurying at the November Executive Board meeting, or by February 15th for jurying at the March Executive Board meeting.
Please note: Dues are not payable until your application for either Exhibiting or Associate membership has been juried and accepted. After the jury process on the dates above, you will be notified by our Membership Chair of your application status and given instructions on next steps for payment of dues and any other membership requirements.
If applying for Exhibiting membership:
If applying for Associate membership: no submission of artwork is required, just the application

If applying for Exhibiting membership:
- attach three (3) examples of your original art with your application in JPG or PNG format
- image filenames should be formatted ArtistName_Title_Medium_Size.jpg (or .png)
- at least one submitted piece should have been completed in the last 12 months
- art must be original; work copied from other artist's work, published photographs, or other copyrighted material is NOT acceptable
If applying for Associate membership: no submission of artwork is required, just the application

Maintains the digital and physical JRAL archive of League documents and records. Computer skills are required.
Identifies community outreach opportunities outside of the League and oversees service projects and charitable donations. Identifies and investigates possible exhibit venues, schedules exhibits and is primary venue contact; manages member signups. Computer, organizational and communication skills needed. Manages exhibit hanging, including drop off/pickup reminders, hanging and takedown processes, and working with venue on hanging requirements. Computer, organizational and communication skills needed for chairs. Hanging/gallery experience and computer skills are helpful for committee members. Manages provision of refreshments and related supplies for meetings and exhibit receptions, by procuring refreshments/supplies, or organizing member participation. Includes setup/cleanup for meetings & receptions and special hospitality needs (such as flowers). Oversees new member application process in November and March; coordinates jury/approval process and informs new applicants of relevant membership information. Maintains member directories - current membership list and pictorial “Many Faces” document. Sends cards to members as needed. Computer and communication skills required. Produces periodic electronic newsletter using iContact & distributes to members. Gathers current news and photos to compile into brief articles for the newsletter. Computer skills required for chair. Schedules monthly programs for membership meetings, booking speakers, ensuring speaker has what is needed for talk or demo and oversees audio/visual needs. Organizes field trips. Computer skill helpful. Manages publicity needs for exhibits or other events by coordinating publicity with venues, soliciting members’ images for exhibit publicity, creating exhibit flyers, and arranging for online or published ads. Computer skills needed for flyer design, image management and online media publication. Manages administration and content for website, social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.); also includes administration of iContact (email list, outgoing emails) and JRAL’s Google account. Computer/technical skills are required. |
