Ashland Galleries Tour and Lunch
PLEASE NOTE: This program is scheduled for the 2nd Friday in October and not our usual 3rd Friday meeting date. The tour will include an exhibit by Richard Crozier: Repository of Missing Places at Flippo Gallery at Randolph Macon College in Pace-Armistead Hall. This is a traveling Exhibit of 50 paintings of houses, factories, small businesses and community halls that no longer belong to the landscape and social fabric of towns. Find out more about the gallery at www.rmc.edu/departments/studio-arts/flippo-gallery. Following lunch at the Iron Horse Restaurant, we will take a tour of Gallery Flux and see an exhibit by Christopher S. Phillips, oil painter and Illustrator. Flippo Gallery: Richard Crozier has made a career of painting landscapes out of his car. He doesn’t paint from photographs, and he rarely sketches and then returns to his studio to paint. Instead, the artist parks his vehicle, climbs into the passenger seat, props his easel against the dashboard and paints on the spot, with his inspiration directly before him. Gallery Flux: Christopher S. Phillips studied at Pensacola Christian College, earning a BS in studio art. Afterwards, he stayed and earned his MFA under the mentorship of acclaimed biblical illustrator and fine artist, Brian Jekel. Phillips is currently pursuing an additional MFA in illustration at Marywood University. Phillips has been influenced by revered illustrators and storytellers such as Dean Cornwell, N.C. Wyeth, and Arthur Rackham. Altogether, Phillips considers himself an illustrator in that he seeks to tell stories and convey truth in all of his creative work. |

If you would like to sell your crafts to art league members and guests at our November 17th meeting, reserve your table by emailing Gigi Vranian at [email protected]. She will talk about the pastel medium and materials, touching briefly on some fun painting exercises to increase confidence with value, color and composition. Maria Reardon paints the world around her. Working primarily in pastels, she loves being outdoors, immersed in the world, observing and experiencing everything going on around her. She's drawn to the unique and ever-changing relationships of form and color. She is intrigued by the unexpected combinations of light and color which characterize her work, while working within the confines of physical forms and the spaces they inhabit. Maria is a Virginia native and received her formal education from Virginia Commonwealth University earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in illustration. She studied portraiture with Daniel Greene and continued her study of landscape by attending workshops with Albert Handell, Lorenzo Chavez and other nationally known artists. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, will be our guest speaker at the January 19th meeting, 11:00 am, at St. Matthew’s Church. Annual Artist Challenge “LOVE CONNECTION”
Critiques by Thomas Bradshaw. "Thomas Bradshaw has been painting "en plein air" since he first decided to take a french easel out to a local golf course and capture the day. This has been his love, drive, and goal ever since. To convey the beauty that surrounds us everyday in a way that brings the viewer into the painting. To stop and invoke a memory of time that only happens once. Every time I step outdoors to paint we are faced with bugs, humidity, sun in our faces, sun on the pallet, and even wind and rain, or snow! So we have to overcome those scenarios and produce a finished painting." Find out more about Thomas at his website at thomasbradshaw.net. NOTE: The Artist Challenge will be held in April this year to allow more time for the critiques. No business meeting.
