PictureThe "Fredericksburg Connection" -- JRAL Program Director Sally Booth, FCCA's Carrol Morgan and Carol Rauh, JRAL & FCCA member Bev Bley, and FCCA's Jurgen Brat.
Carrol Morgan discussed the history of Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts and its juried exhibitions and entry process, providing valuable advice on the proper presentation of art for juried shows.  She was joined by FCCA President Carol Rauh and Grants/Fundraising chief Jurgen Brat to give JRAL an in-depth appreciation for the issues of operating a regional art center.

Located in a historic Fredericksburg Old Town building (circa 1785), the FCCA is "where art and history meet."  The FCCA is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization which presents new art exhibits each month, along with special programs and events, and art classes for all ages.

Lisa Freiman, Director of VCU's Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)

ICA Director Lisa Freiman will talk with JRAL about how the Institute of Contemporary Art's focus will encourage in-depth consideration of the central issues of our time, and become a conduit for artistic dialogue locally, nationally and globally.

In June 2014, Virginia Commonwealth University broke ground on the Institute for Contemporary Art. The $35 million, 43,000-square-foot ICA plans to be an incubator for interdisciplinary experimentation for the entire university, and to simultaneously provide opportunities for collaboration both locally and internationally. Poised to become a cultural linchpin for the city of Richmond, the ICA will be a non-collecting museum that showcases a fresh slate of changing innovative exhibitions, performances, films and special programs.

A Conversation with Helen Hull Bailey/"Landscapes Through Time" Video
PictureHelen Bailey, 2014
NOTE:  MEETING CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
The "Godmother" of JRAL is artist Helen Hull Bailey, who in 1964 suggested to her art students that they form their own artist association, in order to continue their collegiality and mutual learning experiences after the class ended.  Thus the James River Art League was born!  Now in her 90s, Mrs. Bailey is still painting, and has wonderful memories and anecdotes to share with us about her life as an artist.
In addition, videos from David Dunlop's PBS series, "Landscapes Through Time" will be shown.  David Dunlop takes us to the locations where the Impressionist masters painted, and explains their techniques while creating a painting of the same scenes.

Christaphora Robeers - Demonstration:  "Using Complementary Colors"

Christaphora Robeers will focus on the use of complementary colors in contemporary paintings.  She will do a series of color relationship exercises as well as do a painting demo.  Please take notes and feel free to photograph the process, if you wish.

Christaphora Robeers is a Dutch born fine artist currently living and working in the United States. Her work has been shown both locally and around the world in a number of galleries, museums and fine art shows. She specializes in medium to large oil paintings but is well versed in a variety of other mediums and techniques. She has spent her life dedicated to researching and exploring traditional as well as contemporary artists and techniques. Making color the focus in her work, she captures the beauty of the world around us whether being the most simple of objects and still life’s to the atmosphere and saturated color seen in the landscapes that surround her.
