2013-2014 Meetings and Programs

Susan Singer - "Zendoodles"
Picture
Artist, writer, speaker, and creativity coach Susan Singer introduced our group to Zendoodles, an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.

Members enjoyed Susan's animation and infectious enthusiasm for this delightful art form!   Visit her website at http://www.susansinger.com/

Field Trip to Washington D.C. -- Vincent Van Gogh at The Phillips Collection
"Van Gogh Repetitions" --  This exhibition takes a fresh look at the artistic process of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890).  While recognized for the intensity and speed with which he often produced paintings during his 10 year career, less well known is the deliberate and methodical process he also brought to many of the same subjects.  Approximately 30 paintings, alongside related drawings and technical photographs, go beneath the surface of some of the artist's most renowned works to examine the ways in which he created nearly identical compositions.

Art League members traveled to the Phillips Collection by chartered motor coach and enjoyed luncheon at the Scion Restaurant in DuPont Circle.  Photographer Susan Fisher reported participants had "a grand and enriching time."
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2013 *
Adele Castillo - Acrylics & Color Harmony
Picture"Play Now"-Adele Castillo
Adele Castillo is widely recognized for her distinctive, contemporary animal and pet portraits. In her work, color leaps from the animals, harmony is maintained, and the subject is captured in ways that will inspire you as an artist, and make you love the world around you just a little more.  Her charismatic presentation at the JRAL meeting was enthusiastically enjoyed!

Adele Castillo teaches acrylic painting and color to adult students through classes and workshops in the Richmond area.  You can visit her website at http://www.adelecastillo.com.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013
Holiday Luncheon, VMFA Marble Hall

Members and guests enjoyed sharing the spirit of the season at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for JRAL's annual holiday luncheon.  The menu was delicious, the celebratory bags of surprises were a special feature, and the collegiality was warm and welcoming.

Bill Kinsey - The Technique of Collage
Picture
Bill Kinsey shared his experience and technique of collage with the artists of the James River Art Leaque during our meeting on January 17th.  Collages -- works of art involving the glueing of various materials to paper, canvas, or wood -- provide a powerful means of expression for artists.  Bill Kinsey, an Experimental Mixed Media Artist with a studio at Richmond's Uptown Gallery, is well known for his many award-winning collages, mixed media and watercolors.  http://www.billkinseyart.com/

Betsy Kellum - "All About Pastels"

FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2014  (2nd Friday)
Wilton House Museum -- Tour and Lunch

On a gorgeous spring day, members visited the museum in Richmond (215 S. Wilton Road, Richmond 23226), with a tour starting at 11:00 am.  An excellent example of Georgian architecture, Wilton House was built in Varina circa 1753 as the centerpiece of a 2000 acre plantation, visited by the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette.  Eventually it was saved from the wrecking ball by the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, dismantled and rebuilt on its present western Richmond site overlooking the James River.  http://www.wiltonhousemuseum.org

Annual Meeting and Members' Artist Challenge

This year's Artist Challenge was to create a piece of art (painting, drawing, collage, etc.) with the focal point being HATS.  Dozens of members threw their hats into the challenge, culminating with a show and critique at our May 16th meeting.  Christopher Wynn delivered the lively critique, opening with the comment that "There are a lot of talented people in this organization!"  Thanks, Chris!

This was our final meeting of the season.  Watch for the 2014-15 Program Schedule, to be posted over the summer.
