Field Trip to Washington D.C. -- Vincent Van Gogh at The Phillips Collection
"Van Gogh Repetitions" -- This exhibition takes a fresh look at the artistic process of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890). While recognized for the intensity and speed with which he often produced paintings during his 10 year career, less well known is the deliberate and methodical process he also brought to many of the same subjects. Approximately 30 paintings, alongside related drawings and technical photographs, go beneath the surface of some of the artist's most renowned works to examine the ways in which he created nearly identical compositions. Art League members traveled to the Phillips Collection by chartered motor coach and enjoyed luncheon at the Scion Restaurant in DuPont Circle. Photographer Susan Fisher reported participants had "a grand and enriching time." |

Wilton House Museum -- Tour and Lunch
On a gorgeous spring day, members visited the museum in Richmond (215 S. Wilton Road, Richmond 23226), with a tour starting at 11:00 am. An excellent example of Georgian architecture, Wilton House was built in Varina circa 1753 as the centerpiece of a 2000 acre plantation, visited by the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Eventually it was saved from the wrecking ball by the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia, dismantled and rebuilt on its present western Richmond site overlooking the James River. http://www.wiltonhousemuseum.org |

Annual Meeting and Members' Artist Challenge
This year's Artist Challenge was to create a piece of art (painting, drawing, collage, etc.) with the focal point being HATS. Dozens of members threw their hats into the challenge, culminating with a show and critique at our May 16th meeting. Christopher Wynn delivered the lively critique, opening with the comment that "There are a lot of talented people in this organization!" Thanks, Chris! This was our final meeting of the season. Watch for the 2014-15 Program Schedule, to be posted over the summer. |
