Virginia Museum Fine Arts & Flowers
Oct. 22, 2021
Suzanne Spooner-Munch delighted members with a new appreciation for the spectacular floral arrangements that have been created for the VFMA Fine Arts & Flowers Show. Suzanne is a member of the Oxford Garden Club and took part in the flowers exhibition inspired by the American quilting artist, Ruth Kennedy. Each of the truly amazing arrangements is set against the stunning backdrop of the museum’s permanent galleries.
The piece Suzanne Spooner-Munch and Melinda Snow interpreted in flowers is titled: “Blocks and Strips” by Ruth Kennedy, 1926-2020. Suzanne explained details about her arrangement and gave us a better understanding of some of the history and details of this wonderful quilt.
This lovely corduroy quilt was originally sewn in 2003 by Kennedy as part of the Freedom Quilting Bee collective in Gee’s Bend, Alabama.

Jane Neal Cox Memorial Award presented at George Wythe
Congratulations to Timothy Gills, the 2019 recipient of the Jane Neal Cox Memorial Award given to the outstanding senior art student at George Wythe High School. Timothy was chosen by his art instructors and was presented with the award at GWHS's Awards Assembly on May 24, 2019, by Rosemary McKnight, who along with Linda Hultgren, represented the JRAL Community Outreach Committee.
The award this year was a gift card for $300, funded by the League treasury, an anonymous member donation, and Robert Caldwell, who donated his honorarium from his presentation earlier this year. While many awards are presented at the school's ceremony, JRAL's award is the only one in support of the art program.
